SDS (Safety Data Sheet)
A structured document describing chemical hazards, safe handling, storage, emergency measures, and regulatory information for a substance or mixture.
GHS (Globally Harmonized System)
An international framework for classifying chemical hazards and communicating them through labels and SDS documents. Adoption details vary by jurisdiction.
PSM (Process Safety Management)
A management system approach for controlling process-related hazards. Requirements and scope depend on jurisdiction and facility type.
PSI (Process Safety Information)
Technical and safety information about process chemistry, equipment, safeguards, and related documentation needed to understand and control process hazards.
PTW (Permit-to-Work)
A formal authorization system for hazardous work that defines scope, controls, isolations, authorizations, and handovers before work begins.
MOC (Management of Change)
A structured process for evaluating and approving changes to process equipment, chemistry, procedures, or organization that may affect safety.
PSSR (Pre-Startup Safety Review)
A review conducted before startup or restart to confirm that process changes meet safety requirements and that safeguards are in place.
HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study)
A structured team-based technique for identifying process hazards and operability problems using guide words and systematic deviation analysis.
PHA (Process Hazard Analysis)
A general term for systematic methods used to identify and evaluate process hazards. HAZOP and other methods may be used depending on context.
LOPA (Layer of Protection Analysis)
A semi-quantitative method for evaluating risk by identifying initiating events, independent protection layers, and consequences.
SIL (Safety Integrity Level)
A measure of performance required for a safety instrumented function within a safety instrumented system.
SIMOPS (Simultaneous Operations)
Situations where multiple activities occur in the same area or on interconnected systems, requiring coordination to manage combined risk.
Safe Operating Limits
Defined limits for process variables beyond which operation may be unsafe without additional review or safeguards.
Mechanical Integrity
Programs and practices to ensure equipment is designed, installed, tested, and maintained to perform safely in service.
Chemical Compatibility
Assessment of whether chemicals can be safely stored, mixed, or handled together without unacceptable reactions or hazard escalation.
Hazard Classification
The process of assigning hazard classes and categories to a substance or mixture based on data, rules, and jurisdiction-specific adoption.
